im sharing you this Lightened Magneto Mods. (thanks to seiyah-r for sharing)
Magneto Rotor or officially called ROTOR ASSY in parts catalog.
The idea here is to lessen the weight of this magneto, just like flywheel
lightening which is used in offroad bikes.

first thing is you have to remove the side covers where magneto is located.
Thats on the left side of the engine.

Using a puller, you can remove the magneto rotor

When machining, make sure this pulser metal wont be touched

The stock width of magneto is 4mm

and the weight is 1.5kilos

Now goto a machine shop and have it remove 2mm from the outer
portion of the magneto

after machining, this is the final product

2mm is left

The final weight is now 1.25kilos, we save 1/4kilo from the original weight of the magneto 1.5kilos

Install back everything and youre done!

Enjoy your lightened magneto bike :)

what will be the effect of lightening the magneto? the rotor will be thinner, will it lessen the durability and will make a space that will create an annoying sound? Just being curious guys. I just want to know. this is the first time I heard about this mod.

so traxxas, what are the results? does it feel different or not? is it worth doing or just save your money and not bother?

2mm is more than enough to hold the pulser and magnet
so durabilty is no problem.
as long as proper machining is done, there should be no problem.

if you are a modder with a brave heart, go for it.
if not, dont do it.
this kinds of mods are for brave souls only that will accept risk
to whatever they are doing to their bikes.

weight reduction of any moving parts within the bike
is ok because it will lessen the inertia needed to move it
thus results to accelerating faster compared with standard engine.

the most bravest soul go for flywheel weight reduction
or not so brave soul like me i go for magneto weight reduction

:)

another reason:
this is in case with flywheel lightening but same idea with magneto lightening

====
"Most manufacturers make the stock flywheel very heavy. This makes the engine very smooth and enables it to retain energy at part throttle cruise and up long grades for better fuel economy.

An Aluminum flywheel goes completely the other direction with almost no weight. This lets the engine rev up very quickly and allows the engine to work easier due to the reduced weight spinning around on the back of the crank. This is fine as long as you are at full throttle and wide open throttle all the time like in a Road Race or Drag Race only car. As soon as you let off the gas the engine RPM drops instantly and the car slows down. In a road car this causes surging and bucking at cruise speeds and poor driveability and clutch engagement."

i did this modification,, and its effective, rpm goes up, top speed same, if ur using stock cdi, but over all,, less weight on the crankshaft adds more power,, hehe thanks traxx,,,

hi guys,

this mode is the same as what we´ve done during 2 stroke days for stock category, and i´m agree with traxxas no problem for 2 mm...base on my experience during 2T it increase rpm but not much on top speed but acceleration yes...that´s why most of our brother in drag racing world do this trick too...just make sure that the machinist do the right set for the magneto or else vibration....

bro trax ive this to my bike last week... and im happay with the result... downside is the voltage drop faster when having hid on...

nice tips ! dont over lighten it since u'll lose torque on climbing roads.. i'd like to see the electric water pump mod.. :)
