WHICH CONROD IS BETTER ?

dude_pare01

Super Veteran
the bearing with the groove in the middle is better coz it serves as a passage for oil so it has better lubrication

about the con rods....the dull one is a forged on right?

forged ones are tougher...made smaller to save weight coz of the denser material...hope got em correctly...

any prize?hahaha

hmm...

can we assume both have are genuine parts?
if yes, the less weight the better....

how do we know if one is forge while the other one is not?

one more clue.. the shiny one has a higher pitch when ticked.. the other is less (the dull one)..

higher pitch one(shiny) is the cast conrod while the lower pitch(shiny) is the forged conrod
i go for the forged....tougher

our stock piston is a forged one right?try the pitch poppa traxx....haha

speaking of conrod, mine has already been replaced....and ive noticed how shiny it is inside, once the surface inside has been scratched due to wear and tear it will definitely produced a very annoying sound in the engine...i ask the mechanic about the reason why such thing happens and he told me its because of my driving style ... maybe i drive like theres no tommorow or a speed freak which i very much denied coz im not a racer..it cost me around 6 thousand plus(yamaha shop)to fixed it coz i also have to replaced the connecting bearing and connecting pin besides the conrod and one thing the mechanic told me that im already the 4th owner of sniper (automatic) with the same problem that they have fixed and they are wondering why only the automatic clutch encountered this kind of problem is theres an explanation regarding this?

It is better if you could label ConRod A and ConRod B, so we can refer correctly to the item. This is just a suggestion, don't flame me!

Hello Haen,
I mean in the picture. Anyway, it is okay.

I wonder why the conrod is in different finish? Is the shiny one is used item? Or is it about the compound that is used to make the conrod?

I have asked Eng Tatt Motor here in Klang about conrod, and he said that the most important thing about it is the durability and the ability to withstand pressure from the piston. He suggest me to used Takara conrod for LC135 as he told me many LCian used it and there are no problem or complaint about it to the shop.

Also, I have asked at SCK Motor about the weakest item in LC135 engine and he told me it is the conrod. But that is only valid for extreme modification like fitting 60mm block, racing carb, modified exhaust and so on. If you used normally, the conrod maybe can last as long as your bike live.

Hope that helps in any way possible!

at motomalaya : thanks, both are new conrods, and i wonder which one is better.. judging from physical attributes and characteristics.. i dunno about stress test.. but once i made out which one is better i would like to have it Cryo Processed.. :)

EDIT : i do have same questions as u are, why the other one has shiny finish... and what kind of material.. one thing for sure is.. when ticked it had longer amplitudo and higher pitch than conrod B.. that should tell us a little about the material.. too bad i don't have densitymeter.. and bout the bearing.. i agree the bearing B (the whiter one) got lots of oil line.. should help much i think..

According to Grandpa asiong:

CAST - will make use of cast so normally there will be a rough surface finish. Liquid material is poured int a casted shape and allowede to solidify.

FORGED- is shaped by deformation / use of suitable compressive force (e.g. hammer, press). It will refine the grain structure of metal and improves physical properties (strength, ductility, toughness)will produce a neat or smooth surface finish.

Based from articles (for Cars anyway) about which is better to use as engine parts, it is said that forged metals are the way to go and stonger than cast metals. And being more recently developed than the cast, which has a long history, Forged is really the newer tech of the two.

As an example," The cast piston is light and very dimensionally stable. It is found in high-rpm mass-produced engines that are not subject to modification or prone to detonation. This type of piston is however fairly brittle, and the cost of its manufacture has limited its availablity outside the OEM sources and applications.

On the other hand, the forged piston is inherently heavy and less dimensionally stable. It is a good choice for engines in which detonation is probable, and its wide availability has made it the choice of engine modifiers. The special demands of these end users has given the forged piston its own niche in the powersports market."-motorcycleproject.com

density?so easy!

weigh conrod A...then prepare a this set up, a container where the conrod will fit and another wider one for a catch basin...

put the container in the catch basin and fill it to the brim, SLOWLY put the conrod A into tho container(tying it to a string will really help)

water will overflow, after the conrod is fully immersed...remove the conrod and take the container away

collect the water from the catch basin onto a graduated cylinder and get its volume

density = mass/volume

density = grams / milliliters or kg / L

the repeat it with conrod B and compare

@dude_pare : EUREKA ! hahahhahah... thanks dude.. will try... u are referring to Rho value right ? i'll try..

If we relate to density, then we need to make sure the other variable is kept constant that is the compound that made this conrod is the same. For example, if both are made from magnesium alloy, then you can use density as the measure for the toughness, as denser conrod means more metal contents. So, is the conrod made from the same material?

@haen Yes, that is my big question too. So, comparing the density is meaningless unless we know what is the compound made the conrod. Anyway, the bigger question here is, which one is better? Better in the term of durability, stress ability power delivery(as opposed to better lubrication that reduce the friction discussed earlier about the bearing with the groove in the middle). Being lighter is also better, but being tougher is much more important.

i verified with a vixion conrod kit here
the conrod b is almost the same with texture with vixion

the bearing is the same with the other

how do you cryo treatment that conrod?
