according to u..
wat kind of engine oil u used now?
n how was it?
I am trying with Royal Purple 5W-30. Later might change to 5W-20 and see how different it feels. (lower is always better). I chose this brand because it is pretty cheap compare to others, and I like the oil colour (Purple colour one, hehehe).

Usually more expensive full synthetic oil has better protection because they got external molecules which make more oil molecule to stick to ur metal and not easily slipped back into the oil tank if we never ride bike for quite some time. Of course, there are external substances which ensure the oil don't contaminate so quickly at high temperature, so tat we can use the oil for higher mileage.

I heard from frens that Mobil1 and Castrol are good. Motul and Redline are top class in car racing world. Maybe I'll give a try to other brands if I found Royal Purple isn't good. Well, my fren from oil engineering told me it's not good to mix various brands because the external substances are different and not good for engine, so I try not to switch brand unless it gives me bad performance :)

im using my bike within my work place n ma home for the distance at least 80Km for a day..
its mean go n back..izit i need to change my engine oil after each 2k km or wat? n now there sum noisy at my engine..n its not sound smooth anymore..
I changed my oil after 2000km and found it is still pretty clear (compared to my EX5 @ 2000km). It looks like EX5 @ 1000km only. I think the oil filter plays a great role to ensure clean oil. BTW, Yamaha manual recommends oil change every 6000km. I'll change it on 4000km basis because always running at high rpm :p

nope, higher viscosity always result in higher wear and tear bcoz the oil cant flow smoothly in between the metals.
For example, when we use mineral, the oil change will be more frequent because it easily turns black. Turn black means there are a lot of metal trapped in the oil ady. Full synthetic can have much higher mileage because it is thin (lower viscosity) and thus provide better engine protection.

Manual says 20W-40 or higher grade. Higher grade means lower viscosity oil IMHO.

erm... simple explanation would be - higher priced engine oil usually use better substances to protect your engine, even if both the oil has the same rating (such as 0W-30).

Yeah, theoretically it should be fine. Mobil1 0W-20 is pretty cheap, RM37 per quad (946ml). I going step by step from 20W-40 to 0W-20 to play safe. Wanna see if there is any abnormalities when the oil is going thinner and thinner.

medichloreans:
I recalled only 20W-40 and higher recommended. Maybe I am wrong, will go back and check again.
BTW, Yamaha also recommends Shell, but we can use other brand. 20W-40 is the lowest we can get from Shell mineral oil (if i m not mistaken). That's the reason I think Yamaha is recommending this rating.
Anyway, the recommendations can be changed over time, because a few years back when Yamaha is still building this engine, the engine oil has not go as low as 0W-xx, 20W-40 might be the best rating we can get at a reasonable price.
The basic of engine oil usage is pretty much the same (pls read the link I provided above, it has really good explanations).

Yamalube is here actually. Yamaha dealers have it. Weird thing is the dealer himself recommends me Motul semi or full synthetic 10W-40.

Yamaha dealer recomend Motul? Wish it was like that here in Thailand. Mechs here dont recomend anything, just do their job, go home and jerk off.

Plus Motul is the most expensive oil available here.
